This year we decided to start a new tradition. Each member of the family would be responsible for making a dish for our Thanksgiving dinner. Somehow I got stuck with making the turkey. Eddie suggested I get a fresh turkey so off I went to Whole Foods in search of this bird. I asked a girl who was standing at the meat counter what was the difference between an organic and I think a free range or some other kind of turkey and she was nice enough to assist me. I forgot what kind of turkey I got but I remember paying $24.00 for it. Then I went to Walmart to get the rest of the fixings for our dinner and that is where I thought someone stole my wallet. When I got to the cash register my wallet was gone!!! Normally I would freak out but I stayed calm. It must have been the Holy Spirit. I rushed home and cancelled all of my credit cards. What a great start to the holiday season right? I was so exhausted that I went right to bed after I got off work thinking I would just cook everything the next day. Silly me. I got up early the next morning, put on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and started cooking. Well I have never cooked a turkey before so I did not know how repulsed I would be touching a dead bird. I felt like I was washing a baby. I kept gagging. Then there were hairs still on the turkey so I had to pluck the hairs out. Gross! In the midst of all of this I yelled I am so tired of washing this freaking turkey I could have gone to work and not worked as hard and for some reason Kristina thought this was the funniest thing. Believe me when I tell you I was not laughing. I did finish washing it and then plopped his behind in the roasting pan. Then it was into the oven he went. I had my melted butter that I kept basting the turkey with and two hours later I noticed that the turkey was as white as a babies behind. OMG! I put my hand in the oven and it is at best lukewarm. My oven is not working. Then I remember I have a double oven. Lol! I start cooking the side dishes which were green bean casserole, corn pudding, and a pumpkin pie. Aaliyah and Joey made the mashed potatoes. So I decided to go to King Sooper's to see if I could find a turkey, chicken something but the deli was closed so I ended up buying frozen dinners with turkey in them. My son blessed me out when he got to the house because he said I should have cooked the turkey first. Eddie made the dressing, twice baked sweet potatoes and some kind of chudney. No one other than Joey wanted the frozen turkey so everyone else had a meatless thanksgiving dinner. I did put the turkey in the top oven and it did eventually turn a golden brown. Alas I never ate it because I had no room in my fridge for it so I brought it to Eddie's house and he never put it in the fridge. He let it sit out for several days so I told him to just throw it in the garbage. There goes my $24.00 done the drain. Oh well hopefully I will have better luck next year with the turkey. Better yet I think I'll order a fried turkey. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
