Introducing the Young Family

I have always wanted to be a writer and I am a scrapbook fanatic so I decided I would start a blog. That's one way to force myself to write every day. One day before I die I plan to write a novel. Until then this blog will have to do. Nothing much is going on in my life right now. Just work and taking Aaliyah to school and to the mall and over to a friends house. You get the picture. I am Aaliyah's official chauffer. Okay since going to school to be a court reporter my spelling also stinks. Anyway just wanted to say hello and let you know what is going on in my life right now. Take care and God Bless! Mama Young

In Memory of Edward Conway Young

When had dinner with Peter Bragdon last Sunday at Gaetano's to discuss fund raising for an endowed chair at the Governor's Academy in Ed's name. We have been talking about this for the last four year's and now it looks as if it is actually going to happen. Ed loved what used to be GDA(Governor Dummer Academy) and is now the Governor's Academy. He had a wonderful experience there as an ABC (A Better Chance) student. He was involved in everything student council, sports, and of course drama. Over the years I heard so many wonderful stories about his time there and his friends Bill Martin, Larry Coles who is Eddie's godfather, Doug Pope, and Art whose last name escapes me right now. He talked about all the wonderful teacher's, the trouble he should have gotten into but didn't and of course he roles in the various plays that were done during his years there. Then he told me a story about how someone from school called his parents to see if anyone was coming to graduation and no one was because they couldn't afford it and they were told someone has to come but they wouldn't say why. Well his mother came and it is a good thing she did because her son was awarded the highest honor at graduation, the Morse Flag. My husband will always be contected to this school because his name is carved in the wall as the 1973 recipient of the Morse Flag. One of the reason's my husband wanted to be a headmaster was because of one of the former headmaster's at GDA Val Wilke. Hope I spelled the name right. As an adult my husband had the pleasure of working for both A Better Chance and the Governor's Academy. At A Better Chance he had many titles as he was promoted but the job he loved the most was the Assistant to the President. Judith Berry Griffin was the president of ABC at the time and they were a great team. Then in 1996 Peter Bragdon was kind enough and smart enough to hire Ed as the Assistant Headmaster at the Governor's Academy. Again he and Peter were a great team. While there my husband touched the lives of many students and most of the young people who are my friends on facebook are his former students. The first thing Ed did when he became a headmaster was to go out and buy a hat just like Peter Bragdon's hat. You see his example of what a great headmaster was was Peter and he wanted to follow in his footsteps. He always strove for excellence and was not satisfied with mediocre.
Well when Ed passed away in July of 2006 I wanted to do something to honor him and also to help students like him who were extremely intelligent but their families did not have the finances to send them to private schools. There is a scholarship in Ed's name at All Saint's but I wanted to have a scholarship at the Governor's Academy a place that he loved and had made him the man that he was. Therefore Peter, Eddie, Kristina, Aaliyah and I, and Ed's friends from GDA, Middlebury, and St Marks School of Texas will be forming a committee to start fund raising for an Edward Conway Young endowed chair at the Governor's Academy. Don't be surprised if you get a phone call or a letter from one of us asking you to contribute to our endeavor. He was an amazing man and the one way I know how to honor his life and the thing he loved the most is to help the students that he loved so dearly. Love and miss you Daddy and hope you and Streisand are having a blast in heaven. Your wife always and forever! Sheila

Trip to Phoenix

I have had such a wonderful time these past few days that I have been in Phoenix. The Mocha Mom's Conference was awesome. I have never had so much fun at a conference in my life. The mom's I met were so nice and embracing. I am hoping that we will stay in touch. The pole dancing class we took at AZ Pole was awesome. The things Kenya and Trisha did on their pole's was jaw dropping. I'm just saying. Unfortunately I won't be making a living as a pole dancer. We used spinning poles and it felt like I was spinning 100 miles a minute. My body did not like spinning that fast so I got sick to my stomach and almost puked. Darn it and I was so looking forward to my new career. Saturday night we went to the Chocolate Party at the Hilton at Tapatio Cliffs. By then I was so tired from the pole dancing I just sat in a chair and went to sleep. Lol. The workshops were also interesting and I won a 30 minute lifestyle coaching session with Lainika Johnson-Colbert who reminds me of Tonya Chaney and even talks like her. I have had so much fun I really don't want to go back to Denver but alas I must. This trip however has made me think I might want to move back to Phoenix. I am praying about it and asking God to give me wisdom and guidance concerning this. Today I am planning to go see Talisman West and maybe Arcosanti as well. I hope you have a blessed day because I sure am.

I'm Going Going Back Back to Phoenix, Phoenix

I am going to Phoenix this weekend to a conference and I am so excited. I am staying with friends and hoping to see other friends while I am there. I have never been to a Mocha Mom conference so I am looking forward to the different workshops and events they have planned. I am going to a Chocolate Party on Friday night and on Saturday I have signed up for a pole dancing class. I'll try anything once. Lol! Anyway it will be nice to be in sunshine and warm weather. I also plan to drive by my old house. I miss it and I miss my neighbor Larry. He was so nice and helpful. Unfortunately my neighbors in Dam East are not as nice. I fell in my front yard and a neighbor was driving by and didn't even roll down the window to ask if I was okay. I don't want to ruin my good mood so let's change the subject. I hope I will get a chance to go to the Scottsdale Mall. I love that mall it is one of my favorites. I'm bringing my bathing suit too just in case I get a chance to jump in a pool somewhere. I can't wait. Phoenix here I come!
